A new bonus is coming on October 1st – how to save a lot on an electric car

While hybrids are on the rise in France, all-electric cars are grimacing. Their sales are no longer growing. Worse, they have been declining for several months on the new car market, while the opposite effect is being observed in some of our neighboring countries. In an attempt to give them a second wind, the government recently increased the subsidies granted to households for the purchase of an electric vehicle. The ecological bonus, now financed by energy saving certificates, has been increased since July 1 and can reach up to 4,200 euros.
But the government wanted to go further. On Monday, September 8, it announced the creation of another scheme to give households an additional boost. A new €1,000 bonus will be awarded for the purchase of an electric vehicle, provided that its battery is European. Unlike the ecological bonus, this bonus does not appear to be income-related and would therefore apply to all French citizens.

This €1,000 aid will be complementary to the ecological bonus, meaning that the less well-off will be able to accumulate a €5,200 discount to buy a new electric car equipped with a battery made in Europe. According to the press release from the Ministers of Ecological Transition, Agnès Pannier-Runacher, and Industry, Marc Ferracci, this scheme will come into effect on October 1, 2025.
It remains to be seen which vehicles will be eligible for this €1,000 aid. The list should be available in the coming days on the website of Ademe, the public agency for ecological transition. We can already announce that the Renault 5 E-Tech, the best-selling electric car in France today, will be included since its batteries are built in France, near Douai.
This will not be the case, however, for the Citroën ë-C3, which is also selling very well. While the small city car is assembled in Europe, in Slovakia, its batteries are imported from China, which is a deal-breaker.
