The solutions presented by Madrid City Council to mitigate traffic jams due to construction work

The solutions presented by Madrid City Council to mitigate traffic jams due to construction work

Madrid City Council is currently involved in three major improvement projects that significantly affect traffic flow and are scheduled for completion between late 2026 and early 2027.

The first of these is the burying of 3.2 kilometers of the A-5 (Extremadura motorway) from Av. de Portugal to Av. de Padre Piquer. The second is the covering of the M-30 at the Puente de Ventas bridge , and the third involves burying part of Paseo de la Castellana to build a new park on the northern side of this busy thoroughfare. Therefore, the council has presented a series of measures to alleviate the problems posed by these works.

What measures have been taken by the Madrid City Council?

First, the Mobility Management Center will be strengthened to increase surveillance in the areas affected by the construction work , and the Municipal Police will be reinforced at these hotspots.

For its part, the Municipal Transport Company (EMT Madrid) will offer free bus and bicycle-riding services on September 8 and 9. It will also expand its Customer Service staff to the Cuatro Vientos intermodal zone.

In addition, there will be a network reinforcement on 11 bus lines that serve Castellana Norte (66, 67, 124, 134, 135, 173, 174, 175, 176, 178 and 179) and the routes of five EMT Madrid lines (8, 27, 47, 55 and 247) will be restored .

What speed limit will the M-30 have due to the construction?

Over the next few months, the speed limit on the Ventas bridge section of the M-30 highway will be reduced to 50 km/h . In addition, the right lane of the central trunk road and the left lane of the service road of the Madrid ring road will be closed, according to the City Council's Works and Facilities Department.

These measures will allow for safe work on the installation of the piles that will support the future platform located over the M-30. Furthermore, traffic will be interrupted on Calle Marqués de Mondéjar and one lane will be closed in Plaza América Española. The City Council has indicated that the impact on the M-30 will continue until approximately January 2026 .

What is the usual speed limit on the M-30?

As this is a highway in an urban setting, the speed limit is 90 km/h . However, the General Traffic Regulations set the maximum speed limit on high-capacity roads within cities at 80 km/h.

Meanwhile, in the M-30 tunnels, both on the southern bypass and in the section that runs under the Manzanares River, the maximum speed limit is 70 km/h . It's worth noting that these tunnels are the longest in Spain , with a length of nearly 6 kilometers.
