The DGT sets a new record for traffic fines: these are the most common.

The DGT sets a new record for traffic fines: these are the most common.

Throughout 2024, the DGT issued a total of 5,413,507 traffic tickets on the roads under its jurisdiction, that is, intercity roads in all autonomous communities except Catalonia, the Basque Country, and Navarre , representing an increase of 5.14% compared to 2023 .

On the other hand, the report by the Associated European Motorists (AEA) noted that the total revenue collected from this number of fines amounted to €539,985,552 million , meaning that 2024 far exceeded 2022 as the year with the highest revenue collection for the DGT, which in this case was approximately €507 million.

Most common infractions sanctioned by the DGT

In first place, a total of 3,440,530 fines were issued for speeding violations detected by fixed and section radars (2,365,258 sanctions) and by mobile devices (1,075,272 reports), an increase of 22.3% compared to 2023.

After speeding, the next most common violation was driving without a valid MOT (Spanish Vehicle Inspection) , with 599,000 tickets. In third place, the DGT issued 138,980 fines for driving without a valid license or having one revoked by a court. Finally, the next two fines were for using a mobile phone while driving (101,023 tickets) and for wearing a seatbelt correctly (100,766 tickets).

At what speed do speeding tickets result in points being taken away?

To do this, you need to refer to Annex IV of the Traffic Law , where there is a table that shows the amount of fines and points to be deducted for speeding violations, based on the kilometers per hour intercepted by a DGT speed camera.

According to the table, on roads with a speed limit of up to 50 km/h, including speed limits, exceeding speeds of more than 20 km/h is punishable by two points , as well as a minimum fine of 300 euros. However, on roads with a speed limit of 60 km/h or more, points are deducted for exceeding speeds of more than 30 km/h . For example, on a highway with a speed limit of 120 km/h, the DGT will not deduct points from your license until you exceed 150 km/h.

When is speeding considered a crime?

Article 379 of the Spanish Penal Code establishes that it constitutes a crime when "anyone drives a motor vehicle or moped at a speed exceeding sixty kilometers per hour on urban roads or eighty kilometers per hour on interurban roads, the speed permitted by law."

For example, on urban streets, driving over 110 km/h is a crime , since the maximum speed limit in these areas is 50 km/h. On a highway with a speed limit of 120 km/h, driving over 200 km/h is considered a crime , according to the Criminal Code.
