The Civil Guard's warning: these are the summer dates when traffic controls will be increased.

The Civil Guard's warning: these are the summer dates when traffic controls will be increased.

As is customary every summer, the General Directorate of Traffic will carry out special surveillance during these summer months on the Spanish road network , which will receive more than 100 million trips .

Above all, the traffic regulator will focus its attention on motorcyclists, road departures, distractions , and drunk driving. To this end, they will have the assistance of the Civil Guard's Traffic Group, which will increase its presence during weekends and during the so-called "exit/return" operations , which will total five this summer.

When will there be more traffic controls?

The first operation scheduled by the DGT will run from Friday, July 4th to Sunday, July 6th . The next operation will be the Santiago long weekend operation from July 24th to 27th. Subsequently, from August 1st to 3rd , the traffic regulator will establish the operation on August 1st.

This will be followed by a special operation for the August long weekend , which will run from August 14th to 17th. Finally, the summer will conclude with Operation Return from August 29th to 31st . It's also worth remembering that the Civil Guard's Traffic Group will increase operations every weekend.

As usual, during these summer months, around 850,000 vehicles from other European countries cross Spain bound for the North African states, the so-called Strait of Gibraltar .

For this reason, the DGT will develop a special plan covering the main routes (the Mediterranean Corridor, the Central Corridor, and the Vía de la Plata). This plan will include two rest areas and five information points staffed by specialized personnel, as well as more than 2,400 information panels along the corridors providing estimated transit times through Spanish ports .

DGT tips for the summer

During the presentation of the special operation , Grande-Marlaska recalled several of the DGT's standard recommendations for journeys:

  • It's a good idea to plan your trips well . The increase in travel will cause significant traffic jams at the entrances and exits of major cities and on coastal highways, a setback that can be avoided with good planning.
  • It's unreasonable to risk your life to enjoy one more drink or to arrive five minutes early. After the accident, all of that loses meaning.
  • Don't use WhatsApp groups that announce alcohol checkpoints . They're unsupportive and a risk because they can cause someone who's been drinking to avoid them and kill someone.
  • You have to be very careful on short trips , which are the most common cause of fatal accidents in summer.
  • Finally, when driving, keep both hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road. Beware of distractions, which are the leading cause of fatal accidents in the summer.
