Positive data from the DGT accident report for this summer

Summer is typically the time of year with the highest number of journeys on Spanish roads, so much so that during the months of July and August 2025, long-haul journeys increased by 2.77% compared to 2024, exceeding 100 million journeys .

However, despite this increase in mobility in our country, the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, presented a few days ago the provisional balance of data on road accidents in the summer, highlighting the 6% decrease in the number of deaths .

Summer road accident report data

First, the number of fatal accidents has decreased by 16 compared to 2024 , as has the death toll, with 228 people dying on the roads in July and August, 15 fewer than the previous year. Furthermore, DGT data indicates that fewer people were hospitalized, with 949 injured, a decrease of 22.

On the other hand, the reduction in road accidents during the summer has been widespread , regardless of the type of road or mode of travel . Specifically, 55 deaths occurred on dual carriageways and motorways (9 fewer than in 2024) and 173 people lost their lives on conventional roads (6 fewer).

Fatalities by vehicle type

Regarding victims among vulnerable users, there were 101 fatalities, compared to 117 the previous summer . Of these, 20 were pedestrians, 9 were cyclists, 7 were mopeds, and 65 were motorcyclists, which is 7 fewer than in 2024. Furthermore, vulnerable users accounted for 44% of the total number of fatalities .

On the other hand, 97 people who were traveling in cars, 14 in vans , 4 in trucks weighing up to 3,500 kg, 6 in trucks weighing more than 3,500 kg, and 4 in other vehicles, such as tractors or quads, died.

Territorial distribution of the number of deaths

The number of people who lost their lives on the roads varies according to the Autonomous Community , both in the total number and in the increase or decrease compared to 2024:

  • Andalusia: 47 deaths (same as in 2024).
  • Aragon: 8 deaths (-4).
  • Asturias: 6 deaths (+1).
  • Balearic Islands: 5 deaths (-6).
  • Canary Islands: 11 deaths (+4).
  • Cantabria: 0 deaths (-2).
  • Castile and León: 32 deaths (+2).
  • Castilla La-Mancha: 22 deaths (+9).
  • Catalonia: 28 deaths (+2).
  • Extremadura: 9 deaths (-1).
  • Galicia: 20 deaths (+5).
  • Madrid: 12 deaths (+1).
  • Region of Murcia: 4 deaths (-4).
  • Navarra: 2 deaths (-3).
  • La Rioja: 2 deaths (0).
  • Valencian Community: 13 deaths (-14).
  • Basque Country: 7 deaths (0).
  • Ceuta and Melilla: 0 deaths.
