Motorcyclists and cyclists will have to comply with eight new DGT regulations this year.

Motorcyclists and cyclists will have to comply with eight new DGT regulations this year.

Cyclists and motorcyclists represent two vulnerable groups on Spanish roads. In 2024, 286 motorcyclist deaths and 46 cyclist deaths were recorded after road accidents. Therefore, the agency under the Ministry of the Interior has taken action to ensure that these types of road users travel as safely as possible and has introduced eight new regulations.

In addition, in recent years the DGT has launched several campaigns that seek to raise awareness of the importance of respecting all types of vehicles that circulate on the roads and the serious consequences of not doing so .

What are the new DGT measures for motorcyclists?

It was already a measure intended to be included in 2024, but it wasn't until the beginning of this year that motorcyclists were finally required to wear integrated or modular helmets and protective gloves . Without a doubt, this is an essential measure to mitigate damage in accidents and, surely, save more than one life.

On the other hand, the traffic authority wants motorcyclists to be more visible in adverse conditions , so they must wear reflective equipment that is visible from 150 meters in low visibility conditions or at night.

Likewise, since July 1, training courses for future motorcyclists have been strengthened with more practice sessions in open traffic , among other new features . As a result, new motorcyclists will be able to take to the road alone for the first time with greater experience .

Finally, it has not yet been implemented, but the measure has already been announced. It will allow motorcycles to travel on the hard shoulder in traffic jams or traffic jams without exceeding 30 km/h . Furthermore, priority will be given to vehicles that can also use this space.

What measures have been taken for cyclists?

Cyclists, for their part, must also comply with the same reflective measures applied to motorcyclists. That is, they must make their presence known on the road at a distance of 150 meters at night or in low-visibility conditions.

On the other hand, they will be able to drive in the opposite direction on urban roads limited to 30 km/h in traffic jams. Furthermore, on these types of roads, they must always drive in the center and maintain a safe distance of 1.5 meters from other vehicles.

Another of the most important measures included for 2025 allows groups of cyclists to ride in parallel , occupying a maximum of two lanes that must be as close as possible to the right edge of the road.
