Is it legal to drive in the US with a Spanish license?

Having gone through the process of getting your driver's license in Spain, it's clear that no one wants to have to retake the test . But the truth is that in countries like the United States, the road signs, priorities, driving style, and even the speed limit system are different. Therefore, you'll need to adapt to North American roads.

In any case, depending on the state , you can acquire this knowledge directly on the road because the road laws in some countries allow drivers to drive with a Spanish driver's license. If the state you're visiting doesn't allow it, you'll need to obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) .

In which US states is it legal to drive with a Spanish driver's license?

Fortunately for those who want to visit this country , most states allow driving with a Spanish driver's license. However, it is recommended to obtain an IDP. There are some cases where the police or a car rental company requires it.

On the other hand, we find the states where an international driver's license, along with a Spanish driver's license, is mandatory: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Mississippi, Montana, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington . Except for the state that gives its name to the North American capital and Alaska, these are less touristy states.

In short, visiting the United States with a Spanish ID is possible in most cases.

How to obtain an International Driving Permit?

The General Directorate of Traffic issues the International Driving Permit upon payment of the corresponding fee, currently €10.51. This document can be requested either online or in person at a Provincial Traffic Headquarters , although an appointment is required in both cases.

If you choose to process your permit online, you must access the DGT's online office using a digital certificate, electronic ID, or Cl@ve system credentials. Once there, you must pay the fee, fill in the required information, and indicate which Traffic Headquarters or Office you wish to pick up your permit. After two business days, you can pick it up. To do so, you must present an original 32x26 mm photograph , along with a valid ID or passport.

If you apply in person, simply visit the office on the indicated date with an appointment, present the official application form, pay the fee at the office if you haven't already, and prove your identity with your ID or passport.
