Automotive exports in Guanajuato fall; three out of four automakers reported a decrease.
Mexico.- Mexican automotive exports decreased by 81,219 units, a 7.29% decrease, during the first quarter of 2025, compared to the same period in 2024.
From January to March of this year, 1,032,818 vehicles were exported, and from January to March of last year, 1,114,037 were exported.
At the national level, Volkswagen registered the largest reduction in its exports. In the first quarter of the year, it reduced its shipments abroad by 42,421 units, a 38% decrease compared to the same period in 2024.
Chrysler followed, which saw its exports decrease by 32% during this period, resulting in the loss of 40,628 vehicles.
Along with them, the Nissan, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi brands recorded a decrease in their exports.
In contrast , Honda, Acura, Kia, Ford, Toyota, and General Motors registered growth at their plants in Coahuila and San Luis Potosí, according to the Administrative Registry of the Light Vehicle Automotive Industry, compiled by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).
Guanajuato also fallsIn Guanajuato, vehicle exports decreased by 12.90% in the first quarter of 2025, compared to the same period last year. Between the two periods, there was a decrease of 35,781 units.
Of the four automakers located in the state, General Motors recorded the largest decline in its exports.
The Silao plant saw its shipments abroad decrease by 33,249 units, representing a 24.75% drop compared to the previous year, considering the first half of the year.
Mazda saw its exports decrease by 30% during this period, with the Japanese firm reducing its vehicle exports by 16,370 units. For Honda, the decline was smaller, at 16%, representing 9,984 units.
In contrast, the Toyota plant accelerated its exports with an 87% growth, increasing its shipments outside the country by 23,823 units.
Given the current uncertainty in Mexico, corporations are not releasing investments as they used to.
Rolando Alaníz Rosales , honorary president of the Guanajuato Automotive Cluster (Claugto) , explained that the demand is there, the purchase orders are there, but there is an atmosphere of certainty.
On the one hand, you have to increase productivity, but on the other, you're not freeing up the resources to do so; investments aren't coming in like they used to," he said.
Despite this, he announced that by 2026 the automotive industry expects to reach a production of 4.2 million cars, surpassing the results of previous years.
Previously, Manuel Montoya , CEO of the Automotive Cluster of Nuevo León (Claut), pointed out that the decrease in exports is the first effect of the tariff war initiated by the United States .
