The Traffic Department is always watching. Not only are there cameras, radars, unmarked vehicles, and traffic officers as a result of the Ministry of the Interior's efforts to reduce road deaths, but special surveillance campaigns are also being carried out at roadworks, stretches where drivers frequently exceed the speed limit.

Between June 23 and 29, the Civil Guard issued 14,964 traffic tickets during roadworks on intercity roads, 86% of which were for speeding. Of all the tickets issued, 462 were for violating road signs, 174 for using a cell phone, and 175 for not wearing a seatbelt or helmet.

The DGT (Directorate General of Traffic) points out that the 114 reports of illegal overtaking during roadworks are "worrying," whether due to failure to maintain safe distances, illegal lane changes, or negligent driving.

According to provisional traffic accident data, 142 roadwork-related accidents occurred in 2024, 23 of which involved road workers walking in the area and 119 involving workers inside their vehicles.

The increase in travel during the summer, combined with roadwork, makes these points critical for road safety—a lane often disappears, leading to congested traffic—and the Traffic Department emphasizes the importance of respecting road signs.

The Children's Road Safety Association (Aesvi) echoes this sentiment regarding summer travel. In 2024, 18 children died in accidents on Spanish roads. The organization emphasizes the importance of taking extreme precautions and adapting to road conditions and weather conditions.

On secondary roads, especially those near towns and cities, it's easy to encounter pedestrians walking on the shoulder, cyclists, or even animals. If this happens, be extremely cautious and reduce your speed when passing them.

"No matter how short the journey, we must not forget that all children 135 cm or shorter are required to use an approved child restraint system," points out Josep María Vallès, a member of AESVi. It has been proven that the correct use of child restraint systems reduces the risk of death and serious injury to children in the event of an accident by 80%.
