The next stop of the 2024 MotoGP season is in Thailand at the Chang International Circuit in Buriram. The Thailand Grand Prix has only been on the calendar since 2018, but has already produced several MotoGP classics.

If you want to understand the importance of MotoGP in Southeast Asia, you only have to experience a race weekend at the Chang International Circuit in Buriram. Since the motorcycle world championship made its debut in Thailand in 2018, the event has only taken place four times due to the corona pandemic. But each time more than 220,000 fans flocked to the racetrack.

The circuit in northeast Thailand was opened in October 2014. A state-of-the-art facility was built in just 422 days. The track can be configured into five different track variants via four short connections. In addition to the MotoGP, Buriram has also hosted the Superbike World Championship and numerous touring car and GT series.

The route

The Chang International Circuit, designed by Hermann Tilke, is characterized by four long, consecutive straights interrupted by tight corners. Engine power therefore plays an important role in the Thailand Grand Prix. There are also some more fluid combinations in the third and fourth sectors. There are a total of twelve corners to master on the 4.6-kilometer-long circuit, five of which go left and seven to the right. The longest straight is exactly one kilometer long.

The statistics

Buriram was in the hands of Marc Marquez in 2018 and 2019. Back then, still on the Repsol Honda, the Spaniard took both race wins, pole position and also the fastest race lap. After the Corona comeback, however, Buriram degenerated into a Ducati track: Only Miguel Oliveira won the rain race in 2022, otherwise all wins and poles went to Borgo Panigale. In 2023, Jorge Martin took the double, in 2024 Enea Bastianini triumphed in the sprint and Francesco Bagnaia in the Grand Prix.
