Manual or automatic? How Germans tick

In Germany, the question of preferred transmission type remains a controversial topic. While the trend toward automatic transmissions is clearly evident, manual transmissions still have many fans. A recent survey by mobile.de shows that 40.2% of German drivers still prefer manual transmissions.
Interestingly, however, the share of manual vehicles has declined dramatically in recent years. On used car platforms like mobile.de, the supply of manual cars has dropped by around 49% over the past five years.
Automatic on the rise – comfort as a decisive factorThe main reason for the trend toward automatic transmissions is obvious: comfort. 56% of drivers who have switched to automatic transmissions state that the relaxed driving experience is a significant advantage. Driving without manual gear shifting is particularly appealing in cities and in traffic jams . Furthermore, 46.4% of drivers appreciate how easier it is to pull away with an automatic transmission. The demand for automatic vehicles is also reflected in sales figures: the proportion of cars with automatic transmissions has increased from 45% to 64% in the last five years. This shows that comfort is becoming a key purchasing criterion for more and more people.
Manual gearshift remains a conscious choiceDespite the trend toward automatic transmissions, many drivers consciously choose manual transmissions. According to the survey, 55.3% of Germans still drive with manual transmissions. This isn't just about the technical aspect, but also about the driving experience. For 36.5% of respondents, manual transmission offers more control over the vehicle, which is particularly appreciated for sporty driving. Furthermore, 26.7% find manual transmissions sportier and more dynamic. These preferences continue to make manual transmissions an important option for many drivers.
The age range shows a clear trend: Among 18- to 24-year-olds, only 30.1% prefer manual transmissions, while 43.1% of those over 45 continue to rely on manual transmissions. Gender differences also emerge: Men tend to prefer automatic transmissions slightly more often (43.6%), while women prefer manual transmissions (44.6%). Thus, younger generations are increasingly placing value on the convenience of automatic transmissions, reflecting their lifestyles and the increased use of automatic systems in modern vehicles.
The role of the transmission in the purchase decisionThe choice of transmission plays a significant role in vehicle selection. For 66.9% of respondents, the type of transmission is an important criterion when purchasing a car, and for 44.8%, it is even the deciding factor. It's no wonder, then, that more and more manufacturers are investing in the development of automatic systems to meet customer needs.
Ford, for example, is working on electronic manual transmission for electric cars to preserve the familiar driving experience in the electric vehicle era. Combining tradition and innovation could thus help keep manual transmission relevant even in the age of electric mobility, whether that makes sense or not.
Hand-torn athletes:
Whether manual or automatic – the decision depends on personal preference. For many drivers, manual shifting is still a conscious choice, promising a more immersive driving experience and greater control. On the other hand, automatic transmissions offer superior comfort and ease of use, especially for everyday use and longer journeys. The trend toward automatic transmissions is undeniable, but manual transmissions are far from obsolete – they remain a popular option for drivers who prefer to control their vehicles themselves.
