Formula 1 live ticker: Piastri would have won with another safety car

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella revealed this yesterday after the race. His explanation: "Given the penalty, we handled the situation today in such a way that Oscar was allowed to retain the lead despite the penalty in the event of a safety car." "Because if a safety car had been deployed, both cars would have pitted, Oscar would have had to serve the penalty, Lando would have had to wait [behind him], and the two McLarens would have rejoined the track in the same order they came in," said Stella. In other words, if there had been another safety car, Piastri would have won the race. But because there was no further neutralization, McLaren ultimately pitted Norris one lap after Piastri, allowing the Briton to take the lead.

"I think this is a reasonable consideration, and I am sure Oscar will understand and agree with this point of view," Stella said.
