Xiaomi-Tesla rivalry heats up: YU7 unveiled in Beijing

Analysts say the YU7 could pose a major threat to Tesla's best-selling Model Y. Billionaire businessman Elon Musk said yesterday that Tesla is testing self-driving Model Y vehicles in Texas and aims to deliver the first unit in June. Musk said in the X post, "A month ahead of schedule," adding that there were no "incidents" during the tests.

On the other hand, Xiaomi, a latecomer to China’s highly competitive electric vehicle market, has seen its new electric vehicle orders decline recently. Chinese authorities launched an investigation into a fatal highway accident at the end of March, in which the SU7’s driving assistance mode was implicated. Xiaomi apologized for its “insufficiently clear” marketing after customers complained of “false advertising.”

Liu Jiaxing, a 34-year-old technology worker who visited Xiaomi's main showroom in Beijing, said he liked the style and color of the vehicle, and that Xiaomi vehicles can connect to the company's own devices and smart home appliances. According to Liu, all of this shows that Xiaomi understands Chinese customers better.
