Villeneuve: "He's no better than the drivers from the Senna-Prost era"

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen recently completed the 200th race of his Formula 1 career, which began with Toro Rosso in 2015. Verstappen, who achieved his first race victory at the 2016 Spanish GP, has won 64 races to date and has become a four-time world champion.

However, according to Jacques Villeneuve , Verstappen's achievements are not enough to place him among the best in history.

Speaking to RacingNews365, Villeneuve argued that there was only one driver of Verstappen's calibre on today's grid, but that during the time Senna and Prost were racing, five drivers of similar ability were on the grid at the same time.

Villeneuve said: “If we go back to the era when Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost were racing, there were five drivers of Max Verstappen’s calibre on the grid at that time.”

"Today there's only one Max, the rest are just good drivers. In the past, there were a few exceptional talents and a few good drivers." "The balance of the grid has changed a lot in this respect. Max isn't better than the best of the past, but he stands out today because he's at this level on his own. He's the difference maker. He has a real racing nature, and there are very few people left with that nature anymore."

Villeneuve added that Verstappen would not be as dominant as he is today if he had raced during the era of legends like Senna and Prost.
