Alonso's suspension was damaged by gravel

Alonso's suspension was damaged by gravel

The experienced pilot retired from the race after his right rear suspension arm broke while passing the kerb at the exit of the Ascari chicane.

Under normal circumstances, this part should have been able to withstand such an impact.

Investigations revealed that the source of the problem was an incident that occurred during the first lap. Investigations revealed that Alonso's car was struck by gravel and other debris, damaging the suspension. Footage of the moment was also captured on the dashcam.

An official statement from Aston Martin read: “The team can confirm that Fernando’s car was struck by gravel in multiple locations, including the suspension, during the first lap of the race. This caused damage to the component.”

The team was unaware of this damage while the race was still ongoing. Small but constant loads eventually caused the damaged part to break completely, forcing Alonso out of the race.
