Car production fell 5.5% until May to 144,996 vehicles in Portugal

In a statement, the Portuguese Automobile Association (ACAP) highlighted that "in accumulated terms, in the five months of 2025, 144,996 vehicles left factories installed in Portugal, that is, 5.5% less than in the same period of the previous year".

In May, 36,524 motor vehicles were produced in Portugal, which "represented a growth of 35% compared to the same month in 2024", he indicated.

According to ACAP data, in the first five months of the year, 113,030 light passenger vehicles were produced in Portugal, 9.6% less than in the same period last year, while in May 29,390 were produced, 39.6% more.

As regards light goods vehicles, 30,631 vehicles were produced up to May (up 16.5%) and in the fifth month of the year 6,874 (up 20.3%).

According to ACAP, "Europe continues to be the leading market for exports of vehicles manufactured in Portugal -- with 87.8% -- with Germany (20.1%), Italy (12.0%), France (11.0%), Turkey (10.6%) and Spain (9.7%) at the top of the ranking".

On the other hand, the American market, "led by Chile (3.0%), is in second place in exports of automobiles manufactured in Portugal with 3.4% of exports. Africa is in third place with 3% of exports of automobiles manufactured in Portugal".

Regarding the assembly of heavy vehicles, in the first five months of 2025, "there was a drop of 29% compared to the same period of the previous year, representing 93 vehicles assembled in 2025", and, in this period, "only heavy passenger vehicles were assembled".
