What you need to do to work as a VTC driver: requirements, tests and exams

In recent hours, the Community of Madrid has published all the necessary information for those wishing to obtain a VTC (Vehicle Identification Card) driving license . Naturally, these users must meet a series of requirements stipulated by the Ministry of Housing, Transport, and Infrastructure and, in addition, they must pass a series of tests and exams to obtain the driver's license.
What requirements must they meet?As previously mentioned, the Community of Madrid will require certain minimum requirements to obtain a driving license. These include holding a Class B driver's license , not suffering from any infectious or contagious disease or physical or mental disability, not holding other jobs, or not having been convicted of sexual abuse, among others. Below, we'll detail the full list of requirements.
- Possess a class B driver's license and have held it for at least two years.
- Not having been convicted of crimes against sexual freedom.
- Not having other jobs and doing them at the same time.
- You must pass the tests mentioned above to assess and verify your knowledge.
- Be listed on the payroll of the company holding the authorizations, in addition to being registered with social security.
- Not suffer from an infectious or contagious disease or physical or psychological disability that makes it impossible or difficult to carry out the normal exercise of the profession.
- You must not be a habitual consumer of alcoholic beverages or narcotics.
In this case, you'll only need to follow a series of steps to successfully register for the VTC driver's exam. If you meet all the above requirements, the administration will inform and call the interested party with the specific date and time to take the test. What happens if you don't show up? The candidate will be marked as "UNSUITABLE" and must submit a new application to enter the next selection process. Steps to follow to register:
- Pay the fee and download the payment receipt in PDF format.
- Complete the form on the Community of Madrid's Online Office. However, you will need to use the digital ID they will provide you with for this step.
- You will be able to check the date, place and time of the exam , as well as the results.
- If you are 'FIT', you will need to apply for a VTC permit.
The exam lasts 60 minutes and consists of 60 multiple-choice questions , each with four possible answers, and only one of them will be correct. The exam also consists of four different modules, where you must answer a minimum number of questions correctly to pass the section.
- Knowledge of the Spanish language : vocabulary and grammar (you must answer 50% correctly to pass the section, that is, 6 out of 12.
- Physical Environment Knowledge : 18 questions about navigation systems, relevant information, destinations... you must answer at least 9 questions correctly.
- Knowledge of accessibility and public service : users with disabilities, minors, animals, customer service... 18 questions, and you must answer at least 9 correctly, just like in Module 2.
- Knowledge of the legal framework : you must correctly answer 6 questions out of a total of 12.
It is important to keep in mind that to obtain a 'PASS' in this exam you must pass all modules ; otherwise, the final grade will be 'FAIL' , so it is advisable to prepare all sections thoroughly.
Is there any other way to obtain a VTC permit? The Community of Madrid has also announced other possible ways to obtain a VTC permit. The first, as we've explained, is to pass the pre-test. The second applies to users who were already working as VTC drivers before the new Decree 5/2024 (BOCM, January 11, 2024) came into force. However, only those who have worked in the profession for one year without interruption will be exempt from taking the test.
On the other hand, another option would be to renew an expired permit . This permit is valid for five years, and the renewal application period opens three months beforehand, without the need to pass the current exam .
Finally, you can also request a new permit due to a change of name, ID number, or surname... just as with renewal, you don't need to pass the exam, but you will need to justify the change and provide a series of personal information: a copy of your ID and NIE, and the Certificate of Concordance.
