What do the new green lines on Spain's roads indicate?

The DGT has a very clear short- and medium-term objective: to reduce the number of traffic fatalities on the Spanish road network. With this in mind, the agency led by Pere Navarro is seeking methods that will contribute to this reduction, such as the increased installation of speed cameras, for example.

Although they also focus on improving road signage by placing new signs or road markings, such as the new green lines painted on the edges of some roads .

What is the meaning of these green road markings?

The DGT uses these green lines to encourage vehicles to reduce their speed. They are painted parallel to the white lines that mark the shoulder and create a psychological sensation of narrowing of the road . This induces drivers to subconsciously reduce their speed.

On the other hand, they are also positioned to indicate particularly dangerous stretches of road , as they create a visual perception of narrowing, which makes drivers exercise extreme caution. Finally, it should be noted that these measures were first implemented on two autonomous roads in Castile and León, the Cl-613 and the CL-615, both in the province of Palencia , and are now being painted on roads throughout Spain.

It refers to the road marking that indicates an absolute prohibition on crossing or overtaking in both directions of traffic, except for the five exceptions proposed by the General Directorate of Traffic, which refer to overtaking mopeds, bicycles, immobilized vehicles, animals, and pedestrians.

This signage is generally used in particularly dangerous areas , such as sharp curves, changes in gradient with poor visibility , or sections with a high concentration of accidents.

How are accident concentration sections defined?

According to the website of the Congress of Deputies, an Accident Concentration Section (TCA) is a road segment that presents a significantly higher risk of accidents than the average for sections with similar characteristics .

These sections are often identified by their high accident rate , and are also included in the list of areas requiring infrastructure improvements within a short period of time. Furthermore, these sections are generally no longer than three kilometers, and hazard indices that relate the number of accidents to traffic volume are used to assess the risks of these sections.
