Although many people think that urban journeys are harmless for their cars, the truth is that the constant stopping and starting, traffic jams, and low speeds can take their toll on the engine and, with it, the suspension system.

This is the advice of Juan José, a mechanic at Talleres Benezer, who has shared a series of tips on social media to keep your vehicle in good condition. "You have to avoid sudden acceleration and braking if you want to take care of the suspension, tires, and brake pads," the expert emphasizes.

Among his most basic tips, he emphasizes the importance of always starting with the clutch depressed and waiting a few seconds after starting the engine. "This allows the oil to build pressure and lubricate the engine a little," he explains.

Starts should be smooth, avoiding sudden acceleration. To reduce speed, he recommends using the engine brake gradually, without forcing the revs: "Don't put it in a super-low gear that will raise the revs like crazy."

Juan José also insists on the need to maintain a normal rev range—between 2,000 and 3,000 for gasoline engines—to avoid poor combustion. “The car isn't meant to be driven at low revs all the time. That generates carbon buildup and can end up damaging the engine,” he points out.

To keep the system clean, he recommends alternating between city driving and highway trips where the engine can work more freely and eliminate waste.

Finally, the mechanic emphasizes treating the car delicately as a long-term investment. "Remember, we have a baby sleeping on the hood of the car, so we have to make sure it doesn't wake up," he jokes.

The key, he says, is smoothness, anticipation when driving, and regular maintenance: oil, filters, and checks.
