Volvo, the XC70 is back: it is the brand's first extended-range plug-in hybrid

ROME - Volvo is aiming for extended-range hybrids and is inspired by the past. The Swedish brand will soon launch the new XC70 mid-SUV, which takes its name from one of Volvo's most iconic models. When it was introduced, the first XC70 (particularly popular in the Cross Country trim) was a bold evolution of the more traditional V70 station wagon. The new XC70 continues this tradition in a mid-sized SUV format, offering itself as a slightly larger and more spacious alternative to its sister XC60. In addition, the new XC70 mid-SUV is the first extended-range plug-in hybrid produced by the Scandinavian brand and, thanks to an all-electric range of up to 200 km (according to the CLTC standard), it confirms itself as the model with this technology with the greatest range offered by the brand to date.

The XC70 is a major new model for Volvo Cars and is built on the new SMA modular platform, a premium, range-extended plug-in hybrid architecture. The development of this new model is intended to meet the growing demand for longer-range plug-in hybrids in China, where it will be available to order from the second half of the year and may be introduced to other markets later.
“The XC70 marks our strategic entry into the extended-range plug-in hybrid segment, which is a perfect transition point towards full electrification,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars. “It allows us to maintain and expand our product range in a balanced way, while offering a very attractive alternative for customers who are not yet ready to make the switch to fully electric cars. It is also a great example of regionalisation, reflecting our ability to adapt to the needs of local markets.”

According to the company, thanks to its extended electric range and fast-charging capability, the XC70 enables most daily journeys to be tackled with zero tailpipe emissions and at lower cost, while its efficient internal combustion engine provides freedom and flexibility on longer journeys. Visually, the XC70 is a modern take on Scandinavian design with flowing lines from front to rear, while the sculpted haunches combine with a sweeping roofline to create a strong yet dynamic silhouette. At the front, a closed, shield-shaped grille – inspired by the brand’s fully electric models – is combined with an active grille that automatically adjusts to optimise aerodynamics, cabin climate and cooling, helping to improve energy efficiency and increase range. Furthermore, just below the daytime running lights, the XC70 features LED headlights with Matrix technology, which allows the headlights to intelligently adjust to the road and traffic conditions, improving both visibility and safety. At the rear, the vertical C-shaped lights are harmoniously integrated into the rear window, giving the car a contemporary style that is also highly functional.
