Used Cars, the Market Still Growing. 47% Are More Than 10 Years Old

The used market is growing for the seventh consecutive month. In March 2025, there were 497,573 changes of ownership, or 3.8% more than in the same month in 2024. The figure is not far from that of the pre-pandemic period: -0.6% on 2019. Net transfers grew by 2.4%, while mini-transfers grew by 5.6%. With the data from March, it is also possible to take stock of the first quarter of 2025 : with 1,450,742 changes of ownership, the used market grew overall by 3.4 % compared to 2024 (-0.7%). In particular, in the first three months of the year, net transfers were 824,788 (+2.6%), while mini-transfers were 625,954 (+4.4%). Let's now discover the data in detail.
As for net transfers, in March diesel continues to maintain its leadership among fuels, with a share (42.5%) that continues to decline (-2.7% on March 2025). Second place for petrol cars with a share of 38.6% (-0.1%). In third place, quite far behind, hybrids with 9.6%, which however recorded a growth of 2.2%. Wooden medal for LPG with 5% (+0.1), followed by methane vehicles (2% share, -0.2% compared to March 2024), plug-ins with 1.2% (+0.3%) and electric vehicles with 1% (+0.3%). All monthly data follow the trends seen during the quarter. The share of net transfers of vehicles, with more than 10 years of age, was 47.5% (-0.3% compared to March 2024); at 17.6% (+0.8%) for cars aged 6.1 to 10 years. The share of cars aged 4.1 to 6 years, on the other hand, stood at 11.4% (-1.9%); those aged 2.1 to 4 years at 12.3% (+1.2%). The share of cars aged 1.1 to 2 years was 4.6% (+0.2%). Finally, cars up to one year old weighed in at 6.6% (unchanged).
Also for mini-transfers, diesel cars maintain first place among fuels with a share of 44.1%, down 5.6% compared to March 2024. Second place for petrol cars with 31.9% (+0.7%), third for full and mild hybrids which stand at 13% with a growth of 3.9% on last year. Fourth place for LPG cars with 5.6% (-0.1% compared to 2024), fifth for methane cars with 2% (-0.2%). Plug-in hybrids close the ranking with a share of 1.8%, up 0.5%, and electric cars which stand at 1.6% (+0.5%). The share of mini-transfers of cars over 10 years old was 35.4% (-1.6% compared to March 2024); at 19.2% (-0.9% compared to '24) that of cars from 6.1 to 10 years of age. That of cars from 4.1 to 6 years of age, instead, stood at 13% (-2.5%); at 17.3% (+2.2%) those from 2.1 to 4 years. The share of cars from 1.1 to 2 years of age was 5.4% (+0.9%). Finally, cars up to one year old weigh 9.4% (+1.7%).
