‘I’m a car expert - this is the best first car for under £5k’

A top motoring mechanic has selected a plucky French hatchback as the best first car for newly qualified road users. YouTube experts @MotorBodies said the Peugeot 108 city car was the best option for new drivers with the model praised for its affordability.

The specialists said the model came with cheap running costs with fuel and insurance bills a lot lower than other machines. Spare parts were also plentiful making repairs cost-effective for cash-strapped road users. Speaking on YouTube, @MotorBodies said: “I mean you need something cheap and affordable. This Peugeot 108 right here. That’s the one.

“This includes the Toyota Aygo, the Kia Picanto. These are all basically the same cars. These cars here are only a 1.0 litre so they are cheap on insurance and on fuel.

“And if you ever get in a ding then parts are really cheap to replace. Pick a car up like this for easily under £5k. In my opinion, this is the best first car to get.”

The Peugeot 108 is fitted with a 1.0-litre engine with the model able to reach just 72bhp making it ideal for those not used to controlling more powerful vehicles.

The car can reach a top speed of just under 100mph and can hit 0-62mph in 13.8 seconds.

Inside, the 108 is well-equipped with a simple-to-use infotainment system in the centre console.

Higher trim models even come fitted with a reversing camera with some even fitted with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity,

Air conditioning, automatic headlights and plenty of storage also come as standard in most models.

The 108’s compact size makes it perfect for parking in small spaces and could be perfect to take to university or travel around larger cities.

Motoring experts at AutoTrader said: “The only available engine in the 108 is a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol with 72 horsepower.

“It’s perky and willing around town, but on faster roads, especially motorways, it feels rather underpowered. The rate at which you build speed is also hampered by the long gearing.”
