Several well-known rental agencies in the crosshairs – beware of this scam if you rent a car this summer

For many French people, vacations often rhyme with car rental, especially when traveling abroad. After reaching a somewhat distant destination, most often by plane, being able to pick up a vehicle for a few days is very convenient, especially for exploring the surrounding area without having to rely on public transportation. Finding a car rental agency is quite easy, especially in tourist areas. You can rent a vehicle on site or book one online shortly before your departure, which avoids unpleasant surprises in terms of availability.
Unfortunately, many vacationers have unpleasant surprises when they rent a vehicle, whether for a day, a week or more. A consumer association has just sounded the alarm by launching proceedings against five major rental companies whose names are well known to tourists: Europcar, Hertz, Sixt, Goldcar and Centauro. It is not in France, but not far away, in Spain, a country much visited by the French throughout the year and particularly in summer. It must be said that with its sun and its beautiful beaches, Spain has solid assets, not to mention its historic cities to visit like Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Granada…

The Consumer and User Organization (OCU) accuses these large car rental companies of "unfair terms and a lack of transparency in some of their business practices." Among the complaints are excessive deposit amounts, rather unclear insurance conditions, and unfavorable fuel policies when it is not possible to refuel before returning the car.
Many customers also complain about questionable practices when returning vehicles. Some are sometimes charged for nonexistent damage to their car without concrete proof. Others don't understand why they have to pay extra for mandatory safety equipment, such as child seats or snow chains. This practice isn't only found in Spain...
While we wait to see whether this procedure launched by the OCU will result in possible sanctions against the rental agencies concerned, it's important to remember that you should always be vigilant when renting a vehicle. To avoid this, keep in mind that it's essential to read the contract carefully, even if it takes a little time and you're in a hurry to get out and about.
Don't hesitate to take photos of the vehicle when you pick it up and also when you return it. This can save you in the event of a dispute with the rental agency. This way, you won't have to pay extra, which could ruin your vacation.
