Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha) did not claim a fourth consecutive pole position. Spaniard Marc Marquez (Ducati) took pole position for the MotoGP Grand Prix of Aragon after setting the fastest time in qualifying on Saturday at the Motorland Aragon circuit in Alcaniz.

The world championship leader, who has been very comfortable since the start of the weekend, beat his brother Alex Marquez (Ducati-Gresini) and Italian Franco Morbidelli (Ducati-VR46) by 260 and 280 thousandths of a second respectively. The six-time MotoGP world champion, at his home track in Aragon, where he has won six times in ten Grands Prix in his career, will be the big favorite in the sprint race on Saturday and the GP on Sunday.

Quartararo in difficulty

Marc Marquez, who has won three of the first four Grands Prix of the season, has seen victory slip away from him in the last three Sunday races and will be looking to regain victory to escape in the championship standings.

Frenchman Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha), who had secured the last three pole positions but expected to struggle in Aragon, will start in ninth position. He set the second fastest time in Q1, the first part of qualifying, on Saturday morning.

The Nice driver, who complained about a lack of grip on the overheated Motorland Aragon track in Alcaniz, could only manage 18th place in qualifying practice on Friday afternoon, a few hours after an already complicated free practice session.

Zarco will start 12th

The other Frenchman on the grid, Johann Zarco (Honda-LCR), who is coming off a second place in England and a historic victory at the French GP at Le Mans, also took part in Q2 but was unable to pull off a strong start as he will start in 12th place.

The sprint race will start on Saturday in the heat at 3 p.m., while the Grand Prix will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
