Formula 1. Winner in Hungary, Norris gives McLaren a 200th GP victory ahead of Piastri

Formula 1. Winner in Hungary, Norris gives McLaren a 200th GP victory ahead of Piastri

Another double for McLaren. Britain's Lando Norris won the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, ahead of his Australian teammate and championship leader Oscar Piastri , giving McLaren its 200th victory in the premier class of motorsport.

"It's a perfect result today," said Norris, who finished his ninth F1 victory with a winning one-stop strategy - compared to Piastri's two. "I didn't think it would get us the win, I thought it would get us second, because I knew the pace was good," he added, who started third.

Since the beginning of the year, Norris and Piastri have been locked in a fierce battle at the wheel of a car that is superior to all its rivals. On Sunday, the duo secured a fourth consecutive one-two for their team. "I pushed as hard as I could," Piastri said. "When I saw Lando attempt a one-stop, I knew I would have to overtake him on the track, which is easier said than done," on the narrow Hungaroring track. With this victory, Norris is back to within nine points of Piastri in the championship.

Briton George Russell finished third in this 14th round (out of 24) of the season, while Monegasque poleman Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) failed to reach the podium.

Leclerc fourth and annoyed

On the Hungarian circuit, where overtaking is difficult, the start was decisive: Leclerc, who had taken a surprise pole position the day before , managed to take the lead at the first corner. Although he then controlled the first half of the GP, only losing first place during the pit stops, the Ferrari driver saw his chances of a first victory this year dashed shortly after the halfway point.

"It's so frustrating. We've lost all competitiveness," he complained over his radio after being overtaken by Piastri with 19 laps to go. "You should have listened to me, I would have found another way to deal with these problems. Now it's simply impossible to drive." Leclerc also had problems with his chassis.

The Blues out of the points

Behind, four-time defending champion Max Verstappen , who confirmed Thursday that he was staying with Red Bull after weeks of rumors sending him to Mercedes, finished 9th in his 200th GP with the Austrian team. At the Hungaroring, the Dutchman had an anonymous race, like seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton , who has already won eight times on the Hungarian circuit but finished 12th after starting from the same place on the grid.

Among the French, Isack Hadjar (Racing Bulls) finished 11th , ahead of his experienced compatriots Esteban Ocon (Haas) and Pierre Gasly (Alpine), 16th and 19th respectively.
