Automobile. The French are increasingly using public transport and bicycles.

For the French, the time spent in transport or in cars is important, and a new study carried out by Odoxa and Sixt sheds new light on their desire to optimize their daily mobility.

In recent years, two-thirds of French people (64%) have changed their transportation habits. They travel less than before, use public transportation more (30%), and 32% are using new car-related practices such as carpooling (19%), car sharing (15%), leasing (11%), or renting more (10%). It should be noted that 40% of them travel less than before.

Multimodal transport becomes the norm

Nearly a third of French people combine at least two different means of transportation each week. They combine cars, public transportation, bicycles, scooters, and even carpooling, depending on their journeys, needs, and lifestyle. This is one of the findings of this study. But the car remains essential, as the rest of the study proves.

Indeed, 73% consider themselves dependent on their car for their travel. In our country, the car remains by far the most used means of transportation for daily travel. 79% use it every week, and one in two French people use it every day. But 18% also use public transportation every week, 15% ride a bicycle, and 8% use a motorized two-wheeler.

Alternative mobility is progressing

Since 2019, bicycle use has increased three points, from 13% to 16%, scooter use has increased from 5% to 7%, and scooter use has simply doubled, from 3% to 6%. These significant developments reflect the gradual anchoring of these practices in the daily lives of the French.

For its part, car rental continues to attract interest. 37% of people have rented a vehicle in the last two years. This figure rises to 52% among 25-34 year-olds. The French primarily rent to go on vacation (24%) or to move (20%). This trend is unlikely to slow, as 87% of people who have rented a car say they are satisfied with their experience.
