We test the Lancia Ypsilon HF: The "little elephant" takes flight again

We test the Lancia Ypsilon HF: The "little elephant" takes flight again

A Stratos HF, a Delta Integrale 16V, and a Rally 037 welcomed us upon our arrival at the Balocco Circuit in the Italian region of Piedmont. Alongside these three precious jewels of motorsport history, one of Lancia's most legendary drivers, Miki Biasion (world champion in 1988 and 1989), was also waiting for us as the illustrious host of the launch event for the new Ypsilon HF . Without a doubt, the reborn Italian firm wanted to convey to its new launch all the nostalgic aroma of those wonderful years when it dominated the World Rally Championship and filled its showcases with ten World Manufacturers' Championships, three World Sports Car Championships, a 1000 Miglia, two Targa Florios, and a Carrera Panamericana.

That HF logo, born in the 1960s as the hallmark of the Squadra Corse Lancia, featuring its iconic little galloping pachyderm, once again appears on the body of this Lancia Ypsilon HF. Based on the new Ypsilon launched in 2024, this version aims to become a clear announcement that the Italian firm, in addition to moving forward with determination (its managers promise a new model every two years, starting in 2026 with the launch of the new Lancia Gamma), also intends to revive that sporting DNA of yesteryear.

The new Lancia Ypsilon HF is equipped with a 280 hp (207 kW and 345 Nm of torque) fully electric motor, which catapults you from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a remarkable 5.6 seconds . Its top speed is 180 km/h (112 mph) and, with its 54 kWh (400 V) lithium-ion battery and rapid charging of up to 100 km (62 mph) in 10 minutes, it offers a range of 370 km (230 mph).

It features a 20 mm lowered suspension, a 3 cm wider track, and the lowest center of gravity in the segment. Its design is minimalist yet muscular thanks to its specific front bumpers, 18-inch alloy wheels, rear diffuser, and wheel arches. Body colors are available in Nero Ardesia, Bianco Quarzo, and the vibrant Arancione Lava, a tribute to the legendary Fulvia and Stratos racing cars.

Its design also features nods to the past, such as the circular taillights inspired by the Stratos. The interior features Econyl sport seats inspired by the Delta Evoluzione, a perforated leather steering wheel with the HF logo, an aluminum pedal set, a new graphical interface, and a blue and orange dashboard.

The occupant also has a 10.25-inch digital display , Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wireless connectivity, automatic climate control, wireless charging for smartphones, the SALA Hub and ambient lighting.

It also offers Level 2 autonomous driving capabilities : automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, and front and rear cameras.

For enhanced performance, the Ypsilon HF features a Torsen limited-slip differential , which, combined with class-leading torque of 345 Nm, optimizes cornering traction and improves safety in low-grip conditions. The Alcon braking system , with four-piston monobloc calipers and enlarged 355 mm discs, ensures power, stability, and fade resistance.

Dynamic handling and handling are also enhanced compared to the standard version thanks to chassis and suspension adjustments , with stiffness increased by up to 67% in the front stabilizer bar and 153% in the rear. On the move, it offers exceptional stability, while the steering precision and refined suspension geometry give the driver more immediate and intuitive control.

At Balocco's new "Lancia HF Track", a sports car and rally testing facility featuring tight corners, bumps, technical bends and low-traction surfaces, we had a great time at the wheel of the new Ypsilon HF, a car with instant power delivery and very stable and agile in quick changes of direction.

The Ypsilon HF will arrive at dealerships after the summer, with a starting price of 42,100 euros.
