Operation Exit begins with more cars than all year

Operation Exit begins with more cars than all year

The General Directorate of Traffic will launch "Special Operation August 1st" at 3:00 p.m. tomorrow, Thursday, July 31st, with the aim of covering the 6,880,000 road movements expected until midnight on Sunday, August 3rd.

For the entire month of August, the most important month in terms of vehicle movements in the summer of 2025, 52,871,000 trips are expected on Spanish roads.

This is the Operation Exit in which more cars come to the roads of the entire year, since during this first weekend of August there will be a significant movement of vehicles on all roads throughout the country. In this way, the vehicle movements generated by the beginning of the holiday month will coincide on the roads, with long-distance trips in the direction of departure from large urban centers and main destinations in the tourist areas of the coast and coastline, along with the return of those who finish their holidays in the month of July, as well as with the usual weekend trips of the summer period.

Likewise, during the days in which this Special Operation "August 1st - 2025" is being carried out, the influx of both Portuguese and North African vehicles on Spanish roads will continue, the latter heading towards the border posts in their countries of origin in the north-south direction, as part of the first phase of Operation Crossing the Strait-2025. You can consult the special traffic plan for these days on the DGT website [CLICKING HERE] .

Traffic forecasts prepared by Traffic predict that, from early afternoon on Thursday 31st, mainly between 4pm and 11pm, there will be significant movements of long-distance vehicles, causing high traffic volumes and traffic problems in the direction of departure from major urban centres and also on the main access routes to coastal tourist and leisure areas. These will become more pronounced as the afternoon progresses, and then, by late evening, they will reach the destination areas.

Also in the afternoon, there will be smaller movements returning to larger urban centers than those leaving the country, where those who end their vacations in July will be seen.

These movements in and out will be joined by the usual movements in and out of towns as it is a working day.

Meanwhile, from early afternoon on Friday, August 1, from 3 p.m. to midnight, there will be significant vehicle movements, causing traffic problems and hold-ups when leaving major urban centers and also on the main roads leading to coastal tourist and leisure areas. By late afternoon/evening, these vehicles will reach their destination areas.

In addition, at the beginning of the weekend, there will also be increased traffic from large urban centers to coastal tourist areas and second homes.

On Saturday morning the 2nd, heavy traffic will continue heading out of major urban centres, especially between 9am and 2pm, while on Sunday the 3rd, traffic may be problematic in the morning on short journeys on roads connecting coastal towns and access points to beach areas. In the afternoon, between 4pm and 11pm, people will begin to return home, both for those finishing their holidays and for those who have travelled over the weekend. This will result in high traffic volumes and traffic problems on the main communication roads that channel all return traffic from rest areas, the coast and second homes to the access points of major urban centres, and this return journey may extend into the late hours of the night.

To safeguard the safety of all road users, the operation relies on the full availability of all available resources, both human (officers from the Civil Guard's Traffic Group, personnel from the Traffic Management Centers, helicopter patrols, and personnel in charge of equipment maintenance and the installation of roadside measures) and technical (fixed and mobile speed cameras, as well as helicopters, drones, cameras, and unmarked vans to monitor mobile phone use and seatbelt use) available to the DGT.

To facilitate traffic flow in the most problematic areas, measures will be adopted such as the installation of reversible and additional lanes with cones and markings during peak traffic hours and the establishment of alternative routes.

In addition, roadworks will be halted, sporting events and other events that require roadway use will be restricted, and traffic restrictions will be imposed on vehicles transporting dangerous goods, special transport vehicles, and general freight trucks on certain road sections, dates, and times.
