Distortion in electric cars warned due to data omission
León, Guanajuato . - The lack of transparency among several electric car brands, primarily those of Chinese origin, is causing distortions in the planning of the Mexican electricity system, warned the Mexican Association for the Promotion of Electric Vehicles (AMIVE).
Diana Avalos Morales, executive director of AMIVE, noted that without an accurate record of the number of electric vehicles circulating in the country, the National Electric System Development Program (Prodesen) cannot correctly calculate electricity generation requirements, which creates risks for infrastructure, transmission lines, and public policies.
Calculations for the automotive and insurance industries, as well as estimates of greenhouse gas emissions and the design of tax incentives, rely on INEGI records, which are currently incomplete.
Brands such as BYD, Geely, and Gac Motors do not report sales, and Chirey, Omoda, Jaecoo, and Jetour-Soueast stopped reporting sales in 2023 and 2024.
Avalos Morales believed that a law wouldn't be necessary to require electric car manufacturers to report their figures; a voluntary agreement would suffice if the companies are willing to do so, ensuring the sector's growth and the security of the national electricity system.
