Despite tariffs, Toyota's exports grow by 72%

León, Guanajuato.- The high demand for the Tacoma pickup truck produced in Mexico and shipped to the United States has allowed Toyota to increase its exports, despite the trade uncertainty caused by President Donald Trump.

This vehicle is produced at its plants in Apaseo el Grande, Guanajuato, and in the state of Baja California.

Between January and May 2025, the automaker exported 131,074 units manufactured in Mexico, representing a 72% annual increase.

This growth was the highest in the entire national automotive industry during the period, and most automakers reported declines.

To maintain such high demand in the US market, Toyota has had to keep a cool head and maintain its prices despite the fluctuations in tariffs.

Toyota is never a company that makes quick decisions; we analyze everything before making any decision.

"At the moment, we have not taken any measures (to modify export prices); we are analyzing the impact (of the tariffs) and also the final decision regarding them.

“It’s changing every day,” said Gerardo Romero, vice president of Operations for Toyota Motor Sales in Mexico, in a recent interview.

He explained that the units exported in the first five months of the year are all Tacoma pickups, in all their versions.

The Tacoma in the United States is the number one vehicle in that segment.

"So, in the United States, the demand for Toyota remains very high, and the quality produced here in Mexico in our factories is exportable and recognized worldwide," the executive added.

He explained that the company is still waiting to see how the automotive tariffs between the United States and Mexico will ultimately be determined.

Therefore, until there is a better definition of this, there will be adjustments in their export prices.

"There could be changes for the second half of the year," warned the Vice President of Operations. Meanwhile, he clarified, Toyota has earned the trust of its business partners in the United States by maintaining its prices.

"We are very respectful of our clients and take great care in this regard, precisely to avoid these types of abrupt movements," Romero concluded.

Currently, the tariff on cars exported to the United States by Mexico is 15%, according to the Ministry of Economy.
