Construction zones, black spots: DGT wants to prevent accidents during Operation Exit

Construction zones, black spots: DGT wants to prevent accidents during Operation Exit

Summer is here, and with it, the massive "Operation Exit" on Spanish roads. To ensure safety and smooth traffic flow during one of the busiest periods of the year, the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has issued its essential recommendations for drivers.

The DGT insists on a thorough vehicle inspection before starting any trip. It's essential to check the tires (pressure and tread), ensure the brakes and lights are working properly, and check the levels of all fluids (oil, coolant, windshield wipers). Air conditioning is also vital for maintaining a suitable temperature in the passenger compartment and preventing fatigue. Don't forget to bring all your documentation in order.

Planning is your best ally. The DGT recommends planning your route and schedule in advance, avoiding peak traffic hours. If the journey is long, take breaks every two hours or 200 kilometers to rest and avoid heavy meals. Stay informed about real-time traffic conditions and plan alternative routes to avoid potential traffic jams.

During the trip, responsible driving is non-negotiable. The DGT (Directorate General of Traffic) reminds us of the importance of "zero alcohol and drug use" while driving, maintaining a safe distance, and always adapting your speed to the circumstances. Make sure all occupants, including children and pets, travel with seatbelts or child restraint systems properly fastened. Distractions, especially cell phones, should be kept out of the equation. If you feel fatigued, stop immediately and rest.

Finally, make sure you have the required equipment: a reflective vest and warning triangles (or the V-16 warning device, preferably), as well as a spare tire or puncture repair kit.

Extreme vigilance in construction zones to avoid accidents

Furthermore, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has launched a new intensive surveillance campaign, focusing this week on construction zones on intercity roads. From today until Sunday, June 29, the objective is clear: to reduce accidents and protect both drivers and maintenance workers.

The DGT (Directorate General of Traffic) has focused on these sections due to their high risk. According to provisional data for 2024, 142 roadwork-related traffic accidents were recorded, 23 of which involved workers being run over on or near the roadway. Inappropriate speed and distractions are the main risk factors in these areas. Therefore, the Civil Guard Traffic Department and regional police forces will strengthen enforcement at points where roadworks affect the roadway or modify lane layouts, including tunnels.

According to the Traffic Department, most accidents during construction work are caused by vehicles not involved in the construction, often during construction signaling. The DGT emphasizes the importance of correct and visible construction signage, allowing drivers to anticipate and adapt their driving to the new road conditions.

Furthermore, new technologies are becoming crucial allies. The DGT 3.0 Platform will allow real-time warning of the proximity to construction sites in progress, sending information to illuminated panels and directly to connected cars. In this regard, "connected cones" will play a key role: when installed and switched on at the start of work, they geolocate the construction site and automatically trigger an alert in Traffic Management Centers, thus improving the safety of both operators and drivers.

The DGT urges drivers to exercise extreme caution on these stretches, obey signs, and adjust their speed, thus contributing to a safer summer for everyone on the roads.
