A U-turn at dealerships: the first delivery of a Tesla Y to its new owner without a driver and autonomously comes to light.

A U-turn at dealerships: the first delivery of a Tesla Y to its new owner without a driver and autonomously comes to light.

Nacho Martín

There's no doubt that cars and technology are advancing at a dizzying speed, but what very few could have predicted years ago is that, by 2025, a car would leave the dealership and, completely autonomously, drive itself to its new owner's home.

This is what happened with Tesla. A Model Y from Elon Musk's famous brand left the dealership in Texas and drove itself for no less than 30 minutes to reach its owner's home.

This is the first fully autonomous delivery, although there's a catch. For this specific assignment, the manufacturers replaced the usual autonomous driving software with Robotaxi software. Once delivered, they returned this Model Y to its original state.

In fact, there are already a small number of Model Ys that incorporate Robotaxi software and are circulating in cities like Austin, but the big difference is that in these cases they do so with a human copilot supervising everything.

Comments on social media have been swift, highlighting how rapidly we're advancing in technology. Many others expressed amazement at discovering that this car can travel on highways at speeds exceeding 100 km/h.
