Renault 4 vs. Fiat 600: Retro crossovers compared

Renault 4 vs. Fiat 600: Retro crossovers compared

The Renault 4 E-Tech Electric and the Fiat 600 represent a return to the past in a modern form. Both models reinterpret two historic names in a modern way, albeit with different philosophies.

Both are electric (although the 600 is also available with a combustion engine), and both emphasize comfort and spaciousness. So it's worth comparing them.

Exterior

TheRenault 4 E-Tech Electric looks like a compact crossover with a length of 4.14 meters and a ground clearance of 18.1 centimeters, giving it a robust and versatile appearance.

The design, with its horizontal grille and integrated headlights, is reminiscent of the historic R4 . The tailgate extends all the way to the bumper for easy access to the trunk, while the optional folding roof and roof rails add a touch of practicality and style.

The Fiat 600 is 4.18 meters long, and its design is vaguely reminiscent of the 1950s 600. Its soft lines and chrome details give it a somewhat childlike appearance. Its compact dimensions make it ideal for city driving.

interior

Inside, the 4 E-Tech Electric offers a good amount of space. The horizontal dashboard is already familiar from the Renault 5. It houses a Google Automotive-based infotainment system with a 10-inch screen (flanked by a 10.1-inch instrument display, or 7-inch in the base trim).

The living room-inspired seats are upholstered differently depending on the trim level: from the Evolution version with tricolor stitching to the Techno version with denim-like fabric to the Iconic version with houndstooth fabric and retro details. The trunk offers a capacity of 420 liters, with a 35-liter lower compartment and a low loading sill. However, there is a step behind it.

The 600 offers an interior with understated materials and a rather rounded design. The dashboard features a central infotainment display and a round digital instrument cluster. The seats offer comfort and support, while the 15-liter central storage compartment provides additional convenience. The trunk has a capacity of 360 liters, which can be expanded to 1,231 liters by folding the rear seats.

Drives

The Renault is available in two powertrains, both electric. The first offers 120 hp and a 40 kWh battery with a range of 308 km according to the WLTP cycle. The second, however, has a 150 hp engine—also mounted in the front—and a 52 kWh battery with a range of 409 km.

Both versions support AC charging with up to 11 kW and DC charging with up to 100 kW. The One-Pedal function allows the vehicle to be controlled (almost) exclusively with the accelerator pedal, while the Extended Grip system with Snow and All-Terrain modes enhances the driving experience in a variety of conditions. A concept with electric all-wheel drive was recently presented. Whether it will go into production remains to be seen.

The Fiat is equipped with a 156 hp electric motor and a 51 kWh net battery, guaranteeing a range of 400 km according to the WLTP cycle. Charging is possible with up to 11 kW AC and up to 100 kW DC. Those seeking even more power will have to opt for the Abarth 600e .

In addition to the electric model – the 600e – there's also a gasoline-powered mild hybrid. This is equipped with a 1.2-liter three-cylinder turbo engine and an electric motor integrated into the 6-speed dual-clutch transmission, producing either 110 or 145 hp, depending on the version.
