New A4 E‑Tron with software revolution: From classic car to update machine

New A4 E‑Tron with software revolution: From classic car to update machine

The A4 E-Tron is based on the new SSP platform, which is intended to become the standard for future electric vehicles across the VW Group. Unlike previous platforms, it is not only modular but also software-enabled. This means that central control units, cloud-based services, and over-the-air updates are planned from the start.

Audi intends to consistently exploit these opportunities. In the future, many vehicle functions will no longer be permanently installed or equipped, but will be digitally activated. This includes not only infotainment and comfort, but also driving profiles, assistance systems, and performance packages. Those who want more will pay – but not at the time of purchase, but rather when they need it.

This creates a more flexible vehicle concept for buyers. They can start with a basic version and later adapt the car to changing needs. New features can be activated overnight, without a visit to the workshop. This makes the car more durable, more individual, and potentially even more affordable to start with.

But the idea also has its downsides. How transparent is the pricing structure? Will features remain permanent or expire after a subscription expires? And how secure are the systems against failures or attacks? Audi will have to provide clear answers to build trust in this new vehicle logic.

The SSP platform is scheduled to go into series production in 2028. This gives Audi time to further develop the complex software structure with partners such as Cariad or external technology companies. At the same time, the pressure is increasing, as competitors such as Tesla, BMW, and Mercedes are already offering software-based functions in series production.

Audi, however, wants to differentiate itself through quality and system openness. Updates should not just be cosmetic, but bring about real functional changes. The A4 E-Tron is not intended to be an electric car with a digital interface, but a digital product that drives.
