Saturday morning in Misano begins with less than encouraging news. Joan Mir will be unable to compete in qualifying or the afternoon sprint (start: 3 p.m.). The 2020 MotoGP World Champion will sit out due to injury, as his Honda team announced during the second free practice session on Saturday morning.
Mir crashed during the final stages of practice on Friday afternoon. He lost the front end of his RC213V on the approach to turn nine and subsequently slid into the gravel trap. Although the crash itself appeared harmless, the Spaniard immediately afterward remained in the gravel trap, contorted in pain, and later complained of severe neck pain.
After a checkup by the MotoGP doctors, he was declared race-fit for the rest of the Misano race weekend. At the start of the second free practice session, Mir was seen in his garage wearing his leathers, but he only went out for an out lap. After just under ten minutes, the TV cameras showed him leaving the Honda garage through the back door.
Joan Mir: MotoGP start on Sunday in Misano not ruled outAs Honda announced in a statement, Mir is complaining of severe pain and limited mobility in his neck area. Together with the HRC bosses, he has therefore decided to sit out the rest of Saturday in Misano. He will then attempt to race again on Sunday. If Mir is able to start the San Marino GP from 2:00 PM, he will start from twelfth place on the grid. On Friday afternoon, he qualified directly for Q2 in sixth place, but will now be unable to reap the rewards of this strong performance.
