In his latest work for the legendary "The Cal," the Norwegian focuses exclusively on women at different stages of life and from diverse cultural backgrounds. The photographs address fundamental human emotions such as longing, curiosity, passion, and the desire for freedom.
Sundsbø, born in Norway in 1970 and working in London since the mid-1990s, is one of the most influential contemporary image designers. He combines classic techniques with modern means such as 3D scanning, projections, and hand-painted retouching. His works have appeared in international fashion magazines such as "Vogue Italia," "W Magazine," and "Harper's Bazaar Italia" and have been created for brands such as Chanel, Gucci, Hermès, and Louis Vuitton.
For the 2026 calendar, Sundsbø used a mix of studio shots and outdoor motifs. Landscapes from Norfolk and Essex were combined with digitally projected backgrounds to create a controlled yet natural visual effect. Individual sets were staged with water and wind effects – for example, an underwater shot of Eva Herzigová, who appears in the concept as "Medusa."
The photographer describes his approach as a connection between humanity and origins: a visual exploration of nature, time, and space. "It's not about product advertising, but about creating images that sell dreams," says Sundsbø.
The photographs were taken in June 2025 in London and New York, as well as in the aforementioned English coastal landscapes. The visual language combines magical-realistic elements with modern studio technology.
Sundsbø deliberately chose personalities with artistic or athletic careers who possess strong charisma. The cast includes eleven women:
- Tilda Swinton – Scottish actress ( 1960 ), Academy Award winner for her role as Michael Clayton . Known for eccentric roles in arthouse and mainstream productions.
- Isabella Rossellini – Italian-American actress and model ( 1952 ), daughter of Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini. Muse of international fashion houses, later also active as a filmmaker and ethologist.
- Venus Williams – American tennis player ( born 1980 ), seven-time Grand Slam champion. She is committed to health education and the advancement of women in sports.
- FKA twigs – British musician and artist ( born 1988 ), known for her blend of music, dance, and visual art. She began her career as a dancer and established herself as an independent artist in 2012.
- Irina Shayk – Russian model ( born 1986 ), first Russian cover model of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue (2011). She has worked with brands such as Armani, Versace, and Givenchy.
- Eva Herzigová – Czech model ( born 1973 ), known for the Wonderbra "Hello Boys" campaign. She was one of the most sought-after faces in the fashion world in the 1990s.
- Susie Cave – British model and designer ( 1966 ), co-founder of the label The Vampire's Wife . Muse of international photographers and a fixture on the British fashion scene.
- Luisa Ranieri – Italian actress ( born 1973 ), internationally known for Letters to Juliet . She has received numerous awards for her roles in Italian film and television productions.
- Gwendoline Christie – British actress, known as Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones and Captain Phasma in Star Wars . She possesses a striking screen presence due to her height and charismatic acting.
- Adria Arjona – Puerto Rican-Guatemalan actress ( born 1992 ), roles in Emerald City , Triple Frontier , and Andor . Daughter of musician Ricardo Arjona.
- Du Juan – Chinese model and actress ( born 1982 ), internationally known as the first Asian face to grace the cover of French Vogue . Established in her home country's film industry.
