Formula 1 - 10-second penalty and trouble with Verstappen: Bearman and Haas without a chance of scoring points in Spain

Formula 1 - 10-second penalty and trouble with Verstappen: Bearman and Haas without a chance of scoring points in Spain

Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman experienced a minor crash after a good weekend in Monaco. The two finished the Formula 1 race in Spain in 16th and 17th positions, respectively, out of a total of 17 drivers. Just as in qualifying, they lacked pace in the race.

Esteban Ocon's strategy of not changing tires during the safety car period, thus relying on track position, proved to be a failure. The team's only notable incident was Oliver Bearman, who inadvertently blocked Max Verstappen while lapping and earned a 10-second penalty in a duel with Liam Lawson.

Oliver Bearman had the better starting position of the two Haas drivers, starting from 14th place. The Briton was also the more competitive of the two Haas drivers and was fighting on the edge of the points positions at times.

Bearman was locked in a battle for eleventh place with Liam Lawson. The New Zealander attacked the Brit on the inside of turn one on lap 52. Lawson had attacked earlier in the race at the same spot, but with much more optimism. The Racing Bull touched the rear tire of the Haas, which subsequently took the emergency exit.

Bearman also chose the emergency exit on lap 52, but without any danger of collision, thus maintaining his position. He received a 10-second penalty for this, dropping him from 13th to 17th at the end of the race. Bearman, however, doesn't blame himself.

"It was a tough fight. I feel a little unfairly treated, but of course I haven't seen it myself yet. But I felt totally pushed aside," Bearman said.

Bearman blocks Verstappen: Didn't mean him any harm

Just a few corners later, Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, on fresh tires, closed in behind the pair. Norris passed Bearman without any problems, but things got a bit trickier for Verstappen.

Bearman did run to the outside in turn five, but not far enough for Verstappen to pass the Briton without any concern. Verstappen made his frustration clear over the radio. "Damn idiots!"

For Bearman, the situation wasn't so clear-cut. "I don't know why he was angry. I have to look into it. I'm sorry if I did anything wrong. It's difficult to juggle everything, and he was suddenly inside. I didn't mean him any harm."

Ocon unspectacular second to last: Tire gamble does not work

Esteban Ocon's race was less spectacular by comparison. The Frenchman trailed his teammate the entire race. When the safety car came out on lap 56, Ocon didn't pit.

"We stayed out under the safety car with used tires, otherwise we would have ended up at the back of the field again. But it wasn't worth it," said Ocon. The Haas driver was subsequently relegated to the race.

"I think it's good that we're now going into a week where we can analyze things and hopefully come back stronger."
