Alpine targets Ferrari with 1,000 hp hybrid hypercar

Alpine targets Ferrari with 1,000 hp hybrid hypercar

Just shortly after unveiling its first electric crossover, the A390, Alpine has more spectacular news. Just like at Le Mans, the French company plans to challenge Ferrari with a hybrid supercar.

At the media presentation of the A390, Renault CEO Luca De Meo confirmed to Top Gear and others that Alpine is working on a super sports car. The British publication also spoke with Alpine CEO Philipe Krief. He confirmed that the super sports car, planned for 2028, will be powered by a hybrid with a hefty 1,000 hp system output. A turbo V6 will send its power to the rear wheels, and an electric motor will be responsible for each front wheel.

"This car has three objectives," Krief told Top Gear . "One is to elevate Alpine. You need this kind of car because it elevates the rest of the product range. Second, it's an innovation laboratory, for the supercar itself, then for Alpine, and ultimately for the entire [Renault] group. Third, it will be good business.

Conceptually, the Alpine hypercar is similar to what Lamborghini is currently doing with the Temerario and the Revuelto, and what Ferrari has already shown with the SF90. Only with a V6 engine instead of something with more cylinders.

Alpine plans to launch five new electric models by 2030. Next year, the sporty Renault subsidiary will unveil the all-electric successor to the current A110. Finally, Alpine plans to revive the A310 name for a 2+2-seater electric sports car based on the same platform as the A110. A larger model above the A390 is also planned, with which the company hopes to enter the US market. The A290 , a sharper version of the Renault 5, is already available.

This is what's next at Alpine

Alpine's motorsport division, Alpine Hypertech, is developing the supercar's powertrain. The company, formed after Renault's exit from the Formula 1 engine program, oversees the Alpine World Endurance Championship, among other development programs. Krief also told Top Gear that the car will not look like Alpine's recently unveiled Alpenglow concept (pictured here) and that the car doesn't yet have a name.
