A2 closed for three days - truck has paralyzed the entire motorway

Following a tanker truck accident, the A2 motorway toward Berlin remains closed. Olive oil has penetrated deep into the road, making cleaning difficult.

One of Germany's most important motorways has been closed for three days, and it's still unclear how long it will remain closed. Because an accident on the A2 caused a large amount of olive oil to spill and clean up is difficult, the lane toward Berlin near Ziesar in Brandenburg has been closed for the third day.

Experts are currently assessing the situation and will then be able to provide more precise information about the duration of the closure, said Tino Möhring of the Federal Autobahn GmbH when asked.

Large quantities of olive oil spilled onto the roadway on Saturday morning, and according to police and firefighters, cleanup efforts are proving extremely complicated. However, the opposite direction of the A2 toward Hanover is now clear again.

The 39-year-old tanker driver apparently lost consciousness due to a health problem. His vehicle left the roadway, clipped the central guardrail, and then crashed into the pillar of a sign gantry. The tanker trailer tore open, and the vehicle overturned, landing across two lanes.

The entire load of olive oil spread across all lanes and penetrated deep into the asphalt surface. Whether soil needs to be excavated will be assessed later today, and only then will an assessment of the duration of the closure be possible, it was announced. The stability of the damaged sign gantry is also currently being investigated.

It is currently unclear whether any environmental damage occurred. The driver was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. Traffic towards Berlin continues to be diverted over a wide area.

Motorists are currently forced to avoid the area, so advance planning is essential. During a Sunday evening trip, Google Maps attempted to direct a FOCUS online editor directly to the full closure. According to Google, this would have delayed his journey by more than an hour.

However, the ADAC recommends: "Drivers familiar with the area are asked to take a wide detour around the area." There are several alternative routes via Burg, Hohenseeden, and Tucheim, or via Möckern, Lübars, and Drewitz. This way, the journey only takes 20 to 30 minutes longer.
